Approximately 1 in 4 people in the UK experience a mental health problem each year. In England, 1 in 6 people report they have experienced a common mental health problem (such as anxiety or depression) in any given week.
When you run the numbers, this is a significant number of people.
Suffering from a mental health problem is far from unusual. The pressures of modern life can make it hard for people to cope on a day-to-day basis. There’s often so much to think about and when these things build-up, we can easily become overwhelmed with simple daily tasks.
Whilst we’re certainly more aware of mental health issues as a society, the overall number of people suffering from mental health issues hasn’t actually changed in recent years. We are having more conversations about mental health than ever before, but this doesn’t mean we’re getting better at finding solutions to deal with these issues.
Every seven years, there is a survey in England to measure the number of people who have been suffering from mental health issues. The most recent survey was published in 2016 and it found that 5.9 in 100 people suffer from generalised anxiety disorder (GAD).
The symptoms of anxiety can dramatically vary from person-to-person. After all, life events, no matter how small, can affect people in different ways. Everyone can have feelings of anxiety at some point in their life. From worrying about the prospects of a job interview to sitting an exam.
Generalised Anxiety Disorder can present psychological and physical symptoms. If you are unfortunate enough to experience this disorder, you will know that it is all-consuming, to say the least. Symptoms of GAD can include dizziness, trouble sleeping, restlessness and heart palpitations.
CBD is one of more than 100 chemical compounds, known as cannabinoids, extracted from cannabis plants. It has attracted significant attention in the wellness industry, with various scientific studies suggesting that it may have the potential to treat a range of conditions, including anxiety.
With growing interest in this chemical compound, the amount of research that is being undertaken to learn more about the potential benefits of CBD is continuing to rise.
For GAD, the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) references two animal studies that have shown CBD to reduce stress. With the subjects observed as having lower behavioural signs of anxiety.
The NIDA has also explored the possible therapeutic effects of CBD oil for treating social anxiety. One such study subjected a group of patients to a stressful public speaking task and found that those who took CBD had reduced levels of anxiety.
A further retrospective case series of 103 adult patients in concluded “CBD may hold benefit for anxiety-related disorders”.
CBD is still very much the ‘new kid on the block’ and more research still needs to be done.
So, if you consume a CBD product, will you experience lower anxiety levels?
It really depends on the individual, the dosages and how severe your anxiety is. Whilst scientific studies so far suggest CBD could potentially reduce anxiety, there is no clinical proof yet to conclude that it certainly does help.
Like anything that emerges onto the wellness scene, more research needs to be done into CBD, specifically on how it can affect those who suffer from certain forms of anxiety, such as generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
