Is Holland and Barrett CBD Oil Any Good? [2021 Update]

Is Holland and Barrett CBD oil any good?

CBD Oil in Holland And Barrett. Our Two Pennies Worth (Updated for 2021).

A clear sign that the UK CBD industry was about to take off was when UK health food giant Holland and Barrett started stocking CBD oil back in January 2018.

With Holland and Barrett’s seal of approval, CBD oil's popularity has continued to rise.

Two years later and it's everywhere.

63% of the UK population have heard of CBD and approximately 7.3 million people are using CBD products.

With so many CBD oil brands in the UK, it's hard to know which ones you can trust.

Case in point:

A study from the Centre for Medicinal Cannabis that found 38% of UK CBD oils had less than 50% of the advertised amount of CBD!

To make it worse:

They said CBD oil from one ‘High Street Pharmacy’ had ZERO cannabinoid content at all!

With that in mind, and the fact that so many people ask us if Holland & Barrett CBD Oil is any good, we decided to do a review of their CBD oils for ourselves.

If you haven't got time to read the whole article, and you'd rather the quick summary, here it is:

Is Holland and Barrett CBD Oil Any Good?

Yes and no, it depends! Some of the brands that they're stocking are excellent, like Love Hemp and Reakiro. But in general their selection of CBD oil disappoints, as they're mostly very low strength and therefore not effective for many people.

Holland And Barrett CBD Oil Reviews

At the time of writing, Holland and Barrett stocks 5 brands for CBD Oils:

Love Hemp, Jacob Hooy, Reakiro, Holistic Herb and Pureis.

They have other brands for CBD Capsules, but for this review we’ve only looked at the CBD Oil products.

In short, here’s how we rank them:

  1. Love Hemp
  2. Reakiro
  3. Jacob Hooy
  4. Pureis
  5. Holistic Herb

And here’s why:

We’re massive fans of Love Hemp.

They're one of the UK's best CBD companies. And they’re one of the select few brands that we've chosen to list on Handpicked CBD.

They also feature in out 2021 update of the Best CBD Oils in the UK.

And for good reason:

Love Hemp sources their CBD from North America’s largest hemp extraction company, Folium Biosciences. Folium grow their hemp in the Colorado sunshine, without the use of any chemical fertilisers, growth hormones or genetically modified products.

After sourcing high quality raw cannabinoid extract from the States. Love Hemp ups their game with their manufacturing process. Producing a wide range of CBD products including CBD oil, CBD capsules, CBD balm, CBD gummies and even CBD chocolate!

Love Hemp's manufacturing process is so good in fact, that a big part of Love Hemp’s business is ‘white-labelling’ CBD products for other CBD brands.

Interesting fact:

Lots of very popular CBD brands on the market actually source their CBD oil products from the team at Love Hemp.

It’s worth noting:

Love Hemp’s products are all ‘Broad Spectrum’ which means they contain a whole variety of cannabinoids except THC. The THC is completely removed in the CO2 super-critical extraction process.

When it comes to Love Hemp CBD oil in Holland and Barrett, there’s one big disappointment:

Only the low strength oils are available!

To make it worse:

They only have one version of the Love Hemp CBD Oil Drops (the 1200mg). The rest are all CBD Oil Sprays.

Which, of course, is fine.

But given drops are the most popular format we'd have expected more. It’s a shame that Holland and Barrett are only stocking a very limited selection.

To highlight, this is Love Hemp's CBD Oil Drops range:

Of course, this may change in the future. But as of time of writing that’s what Holland and Barrett have limited it to.

The good news is:

If you want to shop the full Love Hemp range, we’ve got it all on Handpicked CBD. ?

All in all Love Hemp is a great trustworthy UK CBD oil brand. But the oils stocked in Holland and Barrett are quite low strength. Low strength is fine but a lot of people will need more.

Reakiro is one of Europe’s leading CBD manufacturers and suppliers. They control the whole product lifecycle from seed to sale.

When they started the business in 2017, the Reakiro team chose a region of Poland with the most favourable climate for hemp cultivation. They then hired experienced industry experts to create CBD products of exceptional quality.

Reakiro CBD Oil is a full spectrum oil of real high quality. It comes in in both drops and spray format. The CBD oil drops come in 300mg 3%, 1000mg (10%) and 1500mg (15%) strengths.

And their CBD Oil spray comes in a 30ml bottle with 1000mg of CBD and is available in 3 flavours: Apple Crumble & Custard, Blood Orange and Peppermint.

Our favourite is the 10% drops - 1,000mg of CBD in a 10ml bottle. Using MCT oil as the carrier oil these drops have a good taste and can also be added to food / drinks (if that’s how you like to take your CBD, personally we prefer drops under the tongue).

Jacob Hooy is a reputable Dutch company with a long history dating back to 1973!

They were the first CBD oil brand to get on the shelves at Holland and Barrett. Which salutes to their trustworthiness.

We’re surprised at the lack of product information available on the Jacob Hooy website. We would expect a reputable brand like Jacob Hooy to have a more educational and transparent website.

Like all CBD oil products on Holland and Barrett, there are no 3rd party lab reports attached. (Which is a major flaw from Holland and Barrett), so we went looking on the Jacob Hooy website.

But there are no lab reports on there either... Disappointing.

Holland and Barrett stock four types of Jacob Hooy CBD oil

  • 2.75% CBD oil in a 10 ml bottle
  • 2.75% CBD oil in a 30ml bottle
  • 5% CBD oil in a 10ml bottle
  • 5% CBD oil in a 30ml bottle

They're all 'Full Spectrum'. Which means they contain a full set of cannabinoids, including THC (trace amounts under the legal limit). Again, this is all 'allegedly' as we have no lab report proof.

Jacob Hooy is a reputable brand name in Holland, and thus a solid choice. But the lack of information is disappointing.

**Update: In the BBC's January 2020 airing of "Trust Me, I'm a Doctor" they lab-tested several high street CBD products. The results found:

"...that three of the products contained less CBD than indicated on the label. One, the Jacob Hooy CBD+ Hemp Oil that claimed to be 2.75% CBD, actually contained 1.7%...."

Whilst Jacob Hooy have disputed the claims and accuracy of the test. It's worth pointing out for transparency in this article.

(This is why it's a great idea to check lab reports before you buy CBD oil. On Handpicked CBD we insist all brands publish relevant lab reports for each product.)

If you're looking for a true full spectrum CBD oil, check out CBD Brothers. Arguably the UK's most popular CBD brand.

Pureis is a relatively unique CBD oil brand in that their CBD oil is made with sythetic CBD.

Unlike most CBD oils that are made from the actual cannabis or hemp plant, Pureis CBD oil uses a man-made version of CBD.

The benefit of this is that it ensures the exact dosage of pure CBD isolate that you're getting. But the downside is the lack of other cannabinoids that many studies suggest work best when combined, as part of the "entourage effect".

Holistic Herb is a CBD brand whose product is quite hard to understand. Even for those of us that are well versed in CBD lingo.

Holistic Herb CBD oil comes in two strengths: "Single" 4.2mg or "Double" 8.1mg. Which is a bit confusing straight from the start. (Not to mention the math is wrong).

They’ve 3 bottle sizes at 15ml, 30ml and 60ml, and each size has a strength of 4.2mg or 8.1mg CBD respectively…

(Do they mean 4.2 and 8.1 percent? Or maybe 4.1 and 8.2mg per dose? Or per drop?)

Their product desciption doesn't do much to clear it up:

Can you work out how many mg's of CBD they're recommending you take per day?... We're still crunching the numbers! ?

3 drops, 3 times per day, dose per 1 serving = 8.1mg, 1 dose = 3 drops per serving, each drop = 0.05ml, which is the equivalent of 4.2mg, or 1.4mg per drop ?!!? ??

Your guess is as good as ours!

(This is probably a good spot to plug our article on how much CBD oil you should take.)

To confuse matters with Holistic Herb some more:

Their website claims their CBD is "15x more bioavailable than regular CBD".

They go on to say that "90% or more" (or "over 98%" depending which paragraph you read) of their CBD will be absorbed into your bloodstream. In comparison to, they say, "only 8% or less" of regular CBD that will enter your bloodstream.

We’ve tried to find out some more about their CBD's "micro-emulsified vastly superior bioavailability" (their words not ours), but again their website fails to give much detailed information at all.

One thing is for sure:

As a consumer, Holistic Herb's CBD oil is super confusing.

The CBD world is already daunting and filled with jargon, so if you're labelling your products in a different way to everyone else, then back it up with thorough information.

The team at Handpicked CBD deal with CBD products everyday. We’d consider ourselves somewhat knowledgeable on the market. And we really have no idea what's in a bottle of Holistic Herb CBD oil. So that’s a little worrying.

If it wasn't for the badge of approval from Holland and Barrett, we'd be very wary indeed.

Is Holland and Barrett CBD Oil Any Good? The Conclusion:

The best CBD oil currently on the shelves at Holland and Barrett is Love Hemp (in our opinion). But, the selection they’ve got is pretty limited and low strength. So we’d recommend checking out all of your CBD oil options before making a purchase.
